Lammergeier

Lammergeier

A truly incredible bird especially seen at close quarters. All these images were taken during 2 days spent at a vulture feeding station in the Pre-Pyrenees of Catalonia, Spain in May 2011. 6-7 hours a day were spent in 2 different hides. Jordi our host brought up several dustbins of abatoir offcuts/goats legs etc and once he had departed in his 4x4, the fun began. Up to 140 Griffon Vultures were eagerly waiting and immediately descended in an unruly and noisy mass. Up to 4 Black Vultures arrived soon after and began to bully the Griffons. Up to 10 Lammergeiers, including several juveniles, visited in ones and twos. Reflecting their small and dwindling population, just 2 Egyptian Vultures cruised overhead but did not land.br/br/Many thanks to Steve (www.birdinginspain.com) and Mike (www.wildimages-phototours.co.uk) for a superb trip. See Catalonia May 2011 folder for other images/species.
